Africa is certainly not only a continent of small villages in the jungle and savannah. The urbanisation of the continent is advancing rapidly, while African cities and metropolitan regions are among the fastest growing in the world. Africa Drawn presents one hundred of the most connected and important cities of the continent. The approach of this book is an effort to map the urban form and structure of African cities, and to describe and illustrate how these different places were formed. Therefore, it presents the historic character of African locations as a valuable resource for imagining the future of the continent''s cities. A visual feast of 300 images and masterfully drawn plans illustrate contemporary and historical place-making actions in Africa. The result is a fascinating documentation of African urban space and at the same time a convincing analysis of its structure and morphology.

Security in the Bubble: Navigating Crime in Urban South Africa

Focusing on the South African city of Durban, Security in the Bubble looks at spatialized security practices, engaging with strategies and dilemmas of urban security governance in cities around the world. While apartheid was spatial governance at its most brutal, postapartheid South African cities have tried to reinvent space, using it as a positive technique of governance. Christine Hentschel traces the contours of two emerging urban regimes of governing security in contemporary Durban: handsome space and instant space. Handsome space is about aesthetic and affective communication as means to making places safe. Instant space, on the other hand, addresses the crime-related personal ônavigationö systems employed by urban residents whenever they circulate through the city. While handsome space embraces the powers of attraction, instant space operates through the powers of fleeing.

Placing large sticks in the snow is most likely the oldest method in the world for marking a way in winter. The ancient method has remained unaffected throughout centuries, and in modern Switzerland snow posts are as commonplace as ever before. Their use is not subject to any regulations as neither size nor color nor material are specified and every community is free to apply its own rules and systems. This box of cards æSchneezeichenÆ presents this particular aspect of Swiss culture. For many years, the author has collected a large number of these prototypes of visual communication and photographed them individually. The undefined white-gray background is a connotation of snow that maintains the familiar color scheme of the theme, while at the same time deleting and decontextualizing any practical aspects. In this ambiguity the signs can gain their own language, revealing their true nature to the observer.

The definitive monograph on the legendary Mexican architecture firm known for its soulful, sensual modernism. Although architect Ricardo Legorreta has been often labeled a high modernist, his buildings and that of his firm are rooted in the traditional architecture of his native Mexico. Best known for geometric and planar buildings with stucco walls, painted in reds and coppers, yellows, purples, and blues, the classic Mexican house plan is a recurrent theme in Legorreta''s oeuvre, with courtyards, water features, and arcades playing a prominent role. A protege of the modernist master Luis Barragan, Legorreta founded his own studio in 1964 and was joined in the early 1990s by his son Victor, when the firm became Legorreta + Legorreta. Legorreta features more than thirty projects from the past decade, ranging from an elegant residence in Beverly Hills and a seaside retreat in Greece to condominiums in Acapulco and houses in Mexico City. The book also includes major commercial, Guatemala.

The acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma (born 1954) and photographer Erieta Attali complement one another perfectly in terms of their artistic statement: both of them focus on the inclusion of the landscape. It is not the architecture as such that plays the primary role but the way in which it communicates with the surrounding world. Details from nature and the intricate connection of interior with exterior space characterize the photographs by Attali. In his unique works, Kuma combines Japanese traditions in architecture with those of modernist architecture. His architecture constitutes a bridge where the individual and nature meet. Kuma became famous in the West for his sensitive extension to a mid-century icon in New Canaan, Connecticut, which this exquisite monograph insightfully discusses and portrays.

These projects û large and small, rural and urban û are examples of how architects in Norway have reacted to the challenges of today. How are the different aspects of a modern Scandinavian society reflected in its architecture? How are new technical and material possibilities translated into relevant buildings for the 21st century? The book is based on presentations from Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Review of Architecture, but also contains new material, explaining and discussing some of the main challenges of architecture today, as seen from Norway.

From the record-breaking architecture of Dubai to the majestic gravitas of buildings found in Abu Dhabi, this book combines the diversity and complexity of the United Arab Emirates. However, the rich building culture of the lesser known emirates Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah is also given emphasis. The (architectural) history of the country is deeply anchored in Arabic tradition and was also influenced by Persia, other neighbouring countries and colonial powers. In 1971 the seven emirates established the United Arab Emirates (UAE). What followed was a race to catch up which catapulted the State from a modest Bedouin society into the era of the Burj Khalifa. At the same time, the country is increasingly shedding its dependency on oil and gas and investing heavily in trade, tourism and construction. Masdar City and Yas Island of Abu Dhabi and the towering skyscrapers of Dubai are the most striking results of the economic upswing. In 2020, Dubai will host the Expo - a first in the region.

The official catalog of the 15th Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition. More and more people on the planet are looking for a decent place to live, even though the chances to find one are becoming tougher and tougher by the hour. Nevertheless, on the frontlines of the built environment there lingers a sense of vitality that brings architecture to look at reality in a positive way. This is what people will see at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition: success stories and exemplary cases where architecture has made, is making, and will make a difference. Reporting from the Front aims at explaining to a broader audience what it means to improve the quality of life while working on the margins, under heavy circumstances, and facing pressing challenges. And what it is like to be on the cutting edge trying to conquer new fields.
