Urban Interventions: Personal Projects in Public Spaces

Urban Interventions: Personal Projects in Public Spaces

Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban and rural landscapes, these mostly spatial interventions bring art to the masses. They turn the street into a studio, laboratory, club, and gallery. Modified traffic signs, swings at bus stops, and images created out of sand or snow challenge us to rediscover our environment and interact with it in new ways. The work is an intelligent and critical commentary on the planning, use, and commercialization of public space. With a rich visual selection of projects and methods, Urban Interventions documents this new artistic approach to urban art that is currently making a profound mark on our contemporary visual language. The book shows the growing connections and interplay of this scene with art, architecture, performance, and installation.

Street art has established itself as an integral part of the art world in the last few years. The crossover from subculture to high culture is illustrated by the recent attention that this work has been given by renowned institutions such as the Tate Modern and Fondation Cartier as well as by auction houses like Sotheby s. The topic is discussed in art magazines and the cultural pages of leading newspapers and is featured in the syllabuses of art and design schools. As interest soared, the need for information about street art grew. But, until now, there was no insightful view into the thought and work processes of a reticent, heterogeneous scene whose would-be members often don t even identify with the label. Comprised of interviews with 100 key players from around the world, Beyond the Street offers a comprehensive examination of street and urban art.

For decades after the Communist victory, in 1949, Shanghai remained largely intact, preserved by benign neglect, its architecture a rich legacy of the polyglot collision of Asian and Western cultures that formed the city. Since the nineties, however, ShanghaiÆs metamorphosis into a towering mega-city has been an ineluctable and pitiless process of paving over nearly all previous tracesùa phenomenon stunningly documented in Greg GirardÆs garish, poetic, infinitely sad photographs. In an indignant introduction, William Gibson calls them "Documents of the Gone World." Seeming to have arrived in each case minutes before the bulldozers, Girard shows us here a pair of stone lions sitting amid the rubble of a condemned factory, there a gorgeous mansion in the old French concession, long ago subdivided for worker housing, and last occupied by members of the very crew charged with knocking it down.

Graffiti is a forceful way of inscribing presence or "being" in the world as well as a means of creating affective links to the potency of natural wonders, religious shrines, and ancient ruins as well as the contemporary cityscape. The photographic elevations presented in this volume represent a graffiti-punctuated pilgrim''s progress built around the aesthetics of defacement. Graffiti- and mural-covered walls, buildings, automobiles, and railcars are the artful wonders, the vibrant shrines, and the dynamic ruins that structured Larry Yust''s pilgrimage to some of the most famed metropolitan centers of the world. He has brought back panoramic souvenirs; vistas that let us be there in a way that is perhaps better than being there. This book celebrates the artistry and audacity of the taggers and uncommissioned muralists who decorate and deface contemporary cities.

Artists'' Magazines: An Alternative Space for Art

Magazine publishing is an exercise in ephemerality and transience; each issue goes out in the world only to be rendered obsolete by the next. To publish a magazine is to enter into a heightened relationship with the present moment. During the 1960s and 1970s, magazines became an important new site of artistic practice, functioning as an alternative exhibition space for the dematerialized practices of conceptual art. Artists created works expressly for these mass-produced, hand-editioned pages, using the ephemerality and the materiality of the magazine to challenge the conventions of both artistic medium and gallery. In Artists'' Magazines, Gwen Allen looks at the most important of these magazines in their heyday (the 1960s to the 1980s) and compiles a comprehensive, illustrated directory of hundreds of others. Among the magazines Allen examines are Aspen (1965--1971), a multimedia magazine in a box--issues included Super-8 films, flexi-disc records, critical writings, artists'' postage stamps, and

The Fondation Vasarely in Aix has recently been re-funded and revitalised. This publication celebrates the institution and the modern master who created it. In 1966 Vasarely, ''the father of Op Art'', established his Foundation dedicated to ''art for all'' and ''the city of tomorrow''; a transformed environment where art and architecture merge. Today the Foundation''s building û a remarkable, pristine complex of 16 hexagons û is packed with the geometric abstract objects and installations with which Vasarely changed 20th century art, and is an important cultural and educational site. This book exalts the Foundation''s renaissance with numerous full page illustrations of Vasarely''s work, and texts and quotes that capture his inspirations, importance and legacy.

At Malmö Konsthall, Rivane Neuenschwander has created new installations which help us to explore, imagine, discover, dream and question our surroundings. The new installations function as individual works but they also connect and subtly interrelate to other and older works. She uses an investigative poetic lens to explore maps, landscapes, and abstractions of architecture and nature and in this way she constantly discovers new ways of interpreting and challenging language, movement and consumption. Introductory text by Jacob Fabricius.

Stephen Smith is especially concerned with the fluctuations of mixed media as they are worked, in-process. Smith has been exhibited at the Baltic Centre in the UK and at the Nam June Paik Centre in South Korea; this book of collages, drawings and paintings is culled from an exhibition at MU in Eindhoven. For Smith, form, message and meaning evolve over time, as his found and manipulated media go through various stages of construction, and deconstruction. This in-flux approach is evident throughout More With Less, from its funny line drawings to its worked-over paintings, from expanding avant-garde collages to impulsive graffiti texts.

Winner of the first ILWOO Photography Award, Seung Woo Back explores the opposition of the real and unreal in his photography. The two series presented in this book return to this subject in relation to North Korea. æBlow UpÆ focuses on North Korean censorship and the authoritiesÆ attempts to control national image. In æUtopiaÆ the artist questions how images of the alien and foreign can be idealised or vilified, depending on the bias of perspectives and expectations. With a photographic aesthetic that shifts from the clear and hyper-real to the blurred, human and informal, the book places the two series immediately after one another, their flow designed especially by Dutch graphic designer Hans Gremmen.

The final in a series of three collectable books rediscovering the archives of AnOther Magazine, one of the world''s most influential fashion magazines. Another Art Book looks back on the ambitious artistic projects commissioned exclusively for the magazine''s pages since 2001, bringing together some of the most iconic names in modern art including Jake & Dinos Chapman, Yayoi Kusama, Hans Peter Feldmann, Yoshitomo Nara, Ernesto Caivano, Keith Tyson, Urs Fischer and Damien Hirst. Opening an early copy of AnOther Magazine, readers were immediately confronted with ten pages filled with nothing but art - be it Jake and Dinos Chapman''s twisted vision of the Holy Land Experience, a hypnotic sea of dots penned by Yoyoi Kusama, or Damien Hirst''s bloody skulls and severed heads shot by David Bailey (deemed so shocking the pages were sealed with glue). AnOther Magazine thereby subverted the expectations of readers accustomed to finding a bank of advertising at the front of magazines. inextricably linked.

Since founding Studio Orta in 1993, the Paris-based husband-and-wife team of Lucy and Jorge Orta has produced an extensive body of work that addresses universal concerns about community, shelter, migration, and sustainable development. Beyond merely addressing these issues artistically, their work suggests solutions by modeling fresh approaches to social dilemmas. Their often-playful projects incorporate elements of fashion, art, and architecture, which they combine with performances, multimedia events, and public debates. Featuring hundreds of drawings and photographs, Lucy + Jorge Orta: Food, Water, Life presents recent works that fall into the categories of food, water, and the environment. An interview by curator and critic Hou Hanru provides insight into the artists'' processes and motivations.
