The Italian company Kartell is famous around the world for having invented the culture of plastic furniture and interior fittings. Kartell was founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer with a vision to create something good from plastics, a material whose applications were still relatively unexplored. A fruitful collaboration with the great designer Gino Colombini started, who won the firm its first Compasso d''Oro award in 1955. Particularly since the plastic-loving era of the 1960s and 70s, Kartell has become an enduring household name; from the famous designs of Anna Castelli Ferrieri and Joe Colombo in the 1960s to more recent hits such as Philippe Starck''s Ghost Chairs or Ron Arad''s Bookworm shelves, Kartell has consistently chosen to work with the world''s most talented designers while reinventing plastic as a quality material for the new age. This survey covers the entire history of the company, decade by decade, exploring all aspects of its evolution as well as products.

Dansk M¢belkunst Gallery marks its 20th anniversary with the catalogue, The Anniversary Selection, in which we proudly present a selection of our most extraordinary and prized holdings. While our previous catalogues were devoted to specific designers or fields of crafts in the history of Danish Modern, the selection illustrated here is a more eclectic representation of the most exquisite pieces in our present collection. The Anniversary Selection includes both unique objects and rare works, handcrafted artifacts and industrial icons, but all of them possess the special character of material beauty that distinguishes the masterpieces of the Nordic Golden Age. Thus, the most important of the Danish furniture designers are represented in the catalogue, just as we present an insight into our collection of awarded Finnish art glass and the sculptural ceramics of Danish artist Axel Salto.

This comprehensive, practical guide explores how contemporary furniture is used within interior design to define a space, create division and enclosure, and alter or redefine circulation. Initial chapters illustrate the different contexts in which furniture is used, from the office and domestic interiors to retail and exhibition space; look at types of furniture, whether off-the-shelf or bespoke; and explore the new vogue for recycling and vintage. Later chapters examine both traditional materials such as wood and the more unusual such as stone and glass, while also explaining new methods of manufacture û such as Computer Numerical Controlled and Selected Laser Sintering. The final chapter looks at how a design is developed, the site surveyed, prototypes made and specifications and schedules drawn up. Furniture for Interior Design is a detailed, highly illustrated guide to specifying and placing existing manufactured furniture, but also shows the reader how to design, detail, and site-specific pieces.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) is known and loved in Denmark and around the world for his sophisticated and sculptural furniture - but few people are familiar with his masterly watercolours. Throughout most of his career, his workshop drawings were carefully finished with a watercolour wash. To ease understanding, as Juhl put it. Watercolours hold a power of seduction that no technical drawing possesses. The use of light and shading comes into its own in watercolours, making the chair, the table and the interior come alive. Almost allowing us to feel the smooth surface of the wood and the delicate structure of the textile. The book opens with an essay introducing the reader to Finn Juhl''s fascinating universe and then goes on to present more than 125 watercolours in thematic chapters. In addition to a wide range of furniture designs, the watercolours present applied art, exhibition stands, architecture and interiors, including Juhl''s interior design of the UN''s Trusteeship of SAS''s DC8 airliners from the early 1950s.

A little book redesigning the shape and the role of the chair, adapting it to different people, personalities and body features. Interior design, illustration, comics and sociology all in one book´It all started, with a beige Moleskine in a bookshop in Rome. It''s curious how many designers design chairs, so many chairs, but nobody seems to think about the characters who are going to use them. I liked the idea that by slightly modifying the legs, backrest, seat, I would be able to fit it to the person who''d sit on it''.

In 1965, leading Swiss furniture company USM patented its signature modular furniture system, USM Haller. This flexible storage solution for both home and office was inspired by Fritz Haller''s modular architecture and designed for infinite reuse and reconfiguration. Considered a design classic, USM Haller is included in the collections of major museums including MoMA and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Released as part of USM''s fiftieth-anniversary celebration of this iconic furniture design, Rethink the Modular examines the role of unit-based systems in the wider context of architecture and design. It combines previously published writings, specially commissioned essays from thinkers and innovators John Thackara and Rick Poyner, and interviews with leading figures in the design world that explain how the concept of the modular influences their work. Interspersed with visual material, the texts reveal the many possibilities created by balancing structure with flexibility, and seek to history.
