Whether trophy or status symbol, comfort or escape, books can have profound meaning in a person''s life. As a result, how they store them can take on significant importance. Bookshelf Design examines the most creative storage solutions of recent years by an international cast of industrial and furniture designers. In some, the books are hidden or not immediately recognisable, in others they take centre stage and even interact with the design to create the finished composition.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) is known and loved in Denmark and around the world for his sophisticated and sculptural furniture - but few people are familiar with his masterly watercolours. Throughout most of his career, his workshop drawings were carefully finished with a watercolour wash. To ease understanding, as Juhl put it. Watercolours hold a power of seduction that no technical drawing possesses. The use of light and shading comes into its own in watercolours, making the chair, the table and the interior come alive. Almost allowing us to feel the smooth surface of the wood and the delicate structure of the textile. The book opens with an essay introducing the reader to Finn Juhl''s fascinating universe and then goes on to present more than 125 watercolours in thematic chapters. In addition to a wide range of furniture designs, the watercolours present applied art, exhibition stands, architecture and interiors, including Juhl''s interior design of the UN''s Trusteeship of SAS''s DC8 airliners from the early 1950s.

A little book redesigning the shape and the role of the chair, adapting it to different people, personalities and body features. Interior design, illustration, comics and sociology all in one book´It all started, with a beige Moleskine in a bookshop in Rome. It''s curious how many designers design chairs, so many chairs, but nobody seems to think about the characters who are going to use them. I liked the idea that by slightly modifying the legs, backrest, seat, I would be able to fit it to the person who''d sit on it''.

In 1965, leading Swiss furniture company USM patented its signature modular furniture system, USM Haller. This flexible storage solution for both home and office was inspired by Fritz Haller''s modular architecture and designed for infinite reuse and reconfiguration. Considered a design classic, USM Haller is included in the collections of major museums including MoMA and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Released as part of USM''s fiftieth-anniversary celebration of this iconic furniture design, Rethink the Modular examines the role of unit-based systems in the wider context of architecture and design. It combines previously published writings, specially commissioned essays from thinkers and innovators John Thackara and Rick Poyner, and interviews with leading figures in the design world that explain how the concept of the modular influences their work. Interspersed with visual material, the texts reveal the many possibilities created by balancing structure with flexibility, and seek to history.

In this book design history engages with everyday culture û the title is a reference to the legendary handbooks Nomadic Furniture and Nomadic Furniture 2 from the 1970s. Pallets are a universal symbol of the globalized world. The properties of this transport platform - standardization, stability, simplicity and internationality - are carried over into the work of architects and designers who use pallets as the material for their own creations. This book shows the variety of possibilities that can emerge from the creative interaction with an inconspicuous everyday article. The aspects of their simple design can be expressed by stacking pallets or contradicted in fragile structures. All around the world furniture items and interior design systems are created along with entire buildings based on the predetermined proportions of pallets. Sometimes the mass product is also demolished and only used in parts: for example, when bisected pallets serve as sideboards or individual boards are recycled as façade cladding.
