In 2009, nearly two million people gathered on the National Mall to witness the inauguration of the forty-fourth President of the United States, Barack Obama. Almost fifty years ago on the same grounds, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. "America''s Front Lawn," the National Mall was not only designed for large political and social gatherings but also to collect and showcase America''s culture. Located in the heart of Washington D.C., the Mall is an historic yet evolving example of urban design. Visited annually by approximately thirty million people, the Mall is also a victim of its own success as its grounds and monuments have been steadily eroded by overcrowding in addition to budgetary and administrative pressures. In response to this decline, the newly-formed Trust for the National Mall recently sponsored a competition to redesign key areas of the National Mall.

The Pamphlet Architecture series was founded in 1978 by architects Steven Holl and William Stout as a venue for publishing the works, thoughts, and theory of a new generation of architects. Now in its third decade, this award-winning series continues to build upon its legacy by promoting individual points of view with all of their raw and rough-edged spontaneity. In 1998 a hardcover volume was published collecting the first ten issues of Pamphlet Architecture. Princeton Architectural Press are proud to present the next nine issues in the companion volume >Pamphlet Architecture 11-20. This graphically stunning and theoretically stimulating collection includes the early work of many of today''s best-known architects, as well as an introduction by Steven Holl.

Architecture never goes entirely according to plan. Every project deviates from its designers'' expectations, and wise architects learn to anticipate, mitigate, and sometimes celebrate the errors along the way. Perspecta 46 argues that error is part of architecture''s essence: mistranslations, contradictions, happy accidents, and wicked problems pervade our systems of design and building, almost always yielding surprising aberrations. Today, with increasingly complex projects underpinned by layers of computer code, small errors can proliferate rapidly, and the dream of errorless architecture seems more utopian than ever. This issue of Perspecta -- the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal in America -- considers the challenge of defining error, the difficulty of diagnosing and managing it, and the promise (and peril) of following its lead. Essays and projects illuminate error''s ambiguous agency both in reality and in the architectural imagination, skyscrapers of Google Earth.

Publications-both physical and digital-receive a constant stream of press releases, project updates, and photographs from architects yearning for the validation of having their work published. But still, the vast majority of buildings go unexamined by the critical press. How many times have we seen the same signature project reviewed? How many worthy unknown projects must, by extension, never receive an appraisal? There are any number of factors to account for this. At a moment when new forms of publication are emerging and disrupting traditional models-and the definition of what it even means for a building to "be published" is an open question-it is time to analyze what is being pub- lished, why it''s being published, and to examine what is being left out of the conversation.

Burning books have always been a tragic symbol of repression, and during the Arab Spring and the uprising in Egypt one of the strong symbols of people protesting for freedom and democracy was the human chain formed around the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to protect it and its content from the riots. This battle for the protection of free information is not limited to emerging democracies. In an age of digitalization and budget cutbacks a wider struggle is emerging to prevent public libraries from disruption and thoughtless destruction.

Pamphlet Architecture 34 speculates on how architecture might discuss indeterminate conditions of production through a generative agency of representation. Kulper and Chard explore the indeterminacy of architectural research through drawings that exceed traditional drawing space. Located in two different countries, they communicate by shipping each drawing across geographical borders. As a result the drawing acts as a tactical and conversational medium, providing the architects with new opportunities for the confluence of the uncertain.
