The urban state of a nation-from Olympic dreams to broken Britain. This is what austerity looks like: a nation surviving on the results of what conservatives privately call ''the progressive nonsense'' of the Big Society agenda. In a journey that begins and ends in the capital, but takes in Belfast, Aberdeen, Plymouth and Brighton, Hatherley explores modern Britain''s urban landscape and finds a short-sighted disarray of empty buildings, malls and glass towers. Yet while A New Kind of Bleak anatomizes ''broken Britain,'' Hatherley also looks to a hopeful future and discovers fragments of what it might look like.

In many cities, urban wastelands and vacant structures suddenly metamorphose in exuberant places. After city planners and the real estate market have failed in their initial attempts to develop them, these sites become the setting for clubs and bars, start-up firms and art galleries, migrant economies and informal markets, recreational activities and nightlife. Indeed, it is often precisely here that innovative cultural production and a vibrant public sphere are to be found. The Urban Catalyst research team explored these unplanned temporary uses in five European countries over the course of several years, and did far more than merely analyze their hidden logic. The book contains four sample projects for new-style communities. Four stories told through words, pictures and suggestions about the design potential surrounding everyday living. In other words, it will be looking at an updated model of contemporary life during a workshop open to economists, sociologists, architects, designers, town planners, landscape designers and simple citizens invited to participate in giving an area a new identity. The second of the series urban readers highlights the challenges of the urban life space that we are confronted with. Each protagonist, dubbed ''challenger'' throughout the book gives his or her personal advice on how to deal with selected challenges. Packed into photographs they face real challenges in which urbanity is replaced by water. The fact that the main characters appear to attract and absorb water suggests that urbanity is a flowing contemporary parameter. Besides the staged photography each challenger also speaks about his or her ways and techniques to handle such situations.
