Art on the Wall reveals how designers and artists turn the blank canvases of plain walls into visceral, colorful experiences for anyone entering the room. Projects in a wide range of color, texture, size and style decorate the walls of restaurants, clubs, private homes, stores, art exhibitions and office spaces around the world. More than just aesthetic additions, these pieces of art represent the values, achievements, backgrounds and even flavors of the spaces they decorate. This title features nearly 100 walls in a variety of settings, and each project is given extra depth with information on project designers, locations and clients alongside images featuring the piece. Walls featuring graffiti murals, abstract modern patterns, textured additions, playful characters and even depictions of war and social conflict will inspire readers to look for new solutions for the blank walls in their own lives.

Photographer Ray Mock takes you along on his exciting hunt for new Banksy work during the famous Better Out Than In project in his new book Banksy in New York. This personal narrative offers a day-by-day account of Banksy s first New York residency, chronicling works that include Sirens of the Lambs and the Central Park stand at which original works by Banksy were sold for only $60. Mock s work captures not only Banksy s artwork but the reactions of the public and media frenzies that often accompanied it, giving fans a direct window into the frenetic scavenger hunt that took over New York City in October 2013. Banksy in New York offers a closer look at Banksy s witty and irreverent art and the varied responses it received, while lending insight into the artist s sharp social commentary. This book is a must-have for those new to the scene and Banksy fanatics alike.

Interplay: Neo-Geo Neoconceptual Art of the 1980s

Emerging from New York''s East Village art scene of the 1980s, the so-called neo-geo artists were a loosely associated group that included the painters Ashley Bickerton, Peter Halley, Sherrie Levine, Allan McCollum, Philip Taaffe, and Meyer Vaisman and the sculptors Jeff Koons and Haim Steinbach. Labeled neo-geo for the abstract geometric motifs that characterized only some of their work, the movement was also known variously as simulationism, neoconceptualism, neo-pop, neominimalism, and postabstraction. In this, the first in-depth study of the group, Amy Brandt argues that neoconceptualism is the most precise name for their work. Brandt sees it as an art about art history, characterized by ironic adaptations of past artistic movements and styles, a tendency toward visual interplay, and a theoretical impulse driven by postmodern concerns with intertextuality, deconstruction, and poststructuralism. Brandt investigates the East Village art scene of the 1980s and argues that generation.

The existential vacuum is the psychological landscape that Alex Gross presents in Future Tense. A lengthy parade of characters lost in their cell phones, iPads and computers find themselves in worlds of neon-lit supermarkets, billboard infested metropolises, and naturalistic countryside panoramas. Most of his characters appear bored and distracted. His work exposes the result of corporate-dictated mass culture and our inability to be present and interact with the real world. Alex Gross'' paintings remind us, through a blend of symbolic and literal elements, that it is impossible to escape the domination of corporations and consumerism.

This book explores the artistic nature of tattooing and celebrates its living, creative, changing essence. Alongside the omniscience of tattoing throughout the world for thousands of years, presented through rare artifacts, the book pays tribute to the pioneers of the modern era, those responsible for its great transformation into the mainstream. Tattooing has become one of the most dynamic artistic currents of our era and is ever-evolving, despite the great revolutions the art has undergone. This book looks to its foremost representatives, the tattoo artists themselves, the guardians of the temple. With this in mind, two types of contemporary workshop creations have been produced. The first one presents thirteen silicone models, thirteen extracts of the body, prints modelled from actual people, used by tattoo artists in the exercise of their art, machine worked or using traditional tools, depending on their daily practice. In search of a mise en abyme, blank canvases were millennium.

When Marina Abramovic Dies examines the extraordinary life and death-defying work of one of the most pioneering artists of her generation--and one who is still at the forefront of contemporary art today. This intimate, critical biography chronicles Abramovic''s formative and until now undocumented years in Yugoslavia, and tells the story of her partnership with the German artist Ulay--one of the twentieth century''s great examples of the fusion of artistic and private life. In one of many long-durational performances in the renewed solo career that followed, Abramovic famously lived in a New York gallery for twelve days without eating or speaking, nourished only by prolonged eye contact with audience members. It was here, in 2002, that author James Westcott first encountered her, beginning an exceptionally close relation between biographer and subject.

Brilliantly innovative artists revolutionizing traditional approaches to art through an exaggerated use of scale. Scale is being taken to new extremes in art: from Luke JerramÆs microbiological clear-glass sculptures and Klari ReisÆs petri dish paintings, to Lilian Bourgeat''s oversized furniture and stemware and Janet Echelman''s 230-foot-long aerial sculpture that was installed over the Amstel River in Amsterdam. Art lovers are forced to examine these massive or tiny works through a new perspective. Featured here are forty-five cutting-edge artists from around the world who are revolutionizing our approach to scale in art, using crafted or found objects, unusual materials, texture, color, and patina to create a sense of wonder in which we think afresh about function, appearance, beauty, and aesthetics. The book is divided into two sections: Big art and Small art. The artists showcased are innovative in their choice of materials, which include plastic bags (Pascale of the twenty-first century.

Maps have always been at the heart of human knowledge. Whether they chart a newly discovered land or lay out a complicated process, maps serve to improve our understanding of what surrounds us. Maps make the complex simple, and reveal the complexity behind the apparently simple. Mapping It Out invites artists, architects, writers, and designers, geographers, mathematicians, computer pioneers, scientists, and others from a host of fields to create a personal map of their own, in whatever form and showing whatever terrain they choose, whether real-world or imaginary. Over 130 contributors'' ideas are represented, including Yoko Ono, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, David Adjaye, Ed Ruscha, Alexander Kluge, and many more. Some contributors have translated scientific data into simplified visual language, while others have condensed vast social, political, or natural forms into concise diagrams.

Somewhere between architecture photography and sociological reporting, the work of MARIE SCHUITEN reveals to us the spirit of vernacular architecture. She does not seek to reproduce what is self-evident, but instead to convey to us the very essence of this architecture, which has touched so many architects throughout the world. The photographer gently rests her gaze on this raw-earth architecture which emerged in the middle of the Egyptian desert. She invites us to share her passion for these abandoned villages, to look at their gently curving forms, marked by thousands of years of tradition, to stop and savour for a long instant the torpor that has enveloped them.
