This instalment introduces experiments by architects who began their activities since the outset of the 21st century. Through projects and interviews, a common theme emerges: the architects determination to actively commit to society, whether through projects or collaboration. Both the transformation of buildings and urban spaces and the formation of collectives have played integral roles in recent endeavours by young practices. Includes interviews with The Living (New York), Rotor (Brussels), Vo Trong Nghia (Vietnam), Van Bergen Kolpa (Rotterdam), m7red (Buenos Aires), Assemble (London), Superpool (Istanbul), Collectif Etc (Marseille), among others.

Guest-edited by Alastair Townsend, this issue dives into the complex topicality of the deluge of data driving urbanism and our lives today. It is often stressed how human agency (designers or users) must be the driving force behind technologies conceived to meet cities'' rapidly evolving needs. A series of themes is investigated (mapping, media facades, mobility, computational tools, open-source urbanism), shedding new light on the subjects underlying this contentious discussion. Filled with special features and interviews, plus contributions by Dan Hill, Eric Fischer, Carlo Ratti and Matthew Claudel, Thomas Schielke, John Frazer, Usman Haque, Geeta Mehta and more. 136 p, ills colour & bw, 22 x 29 cm, pb, Japanese/English

In today''s rapidly changing world, the role of real estate has been affected deeply. To such a degree that the Center for Urban Real Estate at Columbia University sees an opportunity to transform the profession from within, stressing its creative potential and introducing an ethical code. This issue of Volume is dedicated to CURE''s ambition to create a continuum between architecture and real estate, as part of the design disciplines. To add yet another perspective, this Volume dives into the archives and presents some architects who actively tried to crack the nut of the building as object, as real estate commodity, and create a more flexible relation with the users. This part of Volume comes in the form of two inserts. The first focuses on the work of the British architect Cedric Price, in connection to the Price exhibition at Bureau Europa, Maastricht. The second addresses Dutch structuralism, as presented by Het Nieuwe Instituut, with An installation in four acts.

Fifty years ago, in 1964, Minoru Yamasaki''s proposed design for the World Trade Center was first revealed to the public. Rising far above the Lower Manhattan skyline, the Twin Towers-centerpieces of the original World Trade Center complex-were intended, in the words of their architect, to ''become a living representation of man''s belief in humanity.'' From the beginning, the project was not without controversy. Positioned at the confluence of several transportation routes, an entire district known as ''Radio Row'' would be claimed through eminent domain and demolished to make way for the new center of commerce. The abstract-arguably overpowering-design invited fierce criticism. Nevertheless, Yamasaki and associate architects Emery Roth & Sons would devote over a decade to the design and construction of the World Trade Center, which proved significant not only as an urban renewal project, but also as an architectural and engineering marvel.

Central to this issue is an investigation into creating new guidelines for developing residential areas as an aggregation of diverse characteristics, to be achieved by researching suburbs in Japan in the 21st century. Often criticised as ugly and chaotic, these post-war suburban developments should perhaps be seen as expressions of the multiplicity and diversity attributable to todayÆs capitalist society. Through numerous, full-page photos of widely varied homes in their respective contexts, it shows how these have fertilised the vocabulary of housing design in Japan, as well as the way urban and suburban residential areas have developed in the nation through the years.

This edition focuses on those places where people tend to spend their free time, showcasing the primal concept of the retreat through experimental design. Locations of the 20 featured projects range from natural environments to dense urban situations. In these places of seclusion, functional necessity is generally of lesser priority than portraying the essential lifestyle that their users or residents desire when spending time away from their everyday lives. To match these requirements, architects are often encouraged to put their experimental concepts into practice. An essay by Juhani Pallasmaa precedes works by Cecilia Puga, Studio Mumbai, David Kohn, Casey Brown and more.

What is Inflection? On a prosaic level, Inflection is the new student-run journal of architecture and the built environment from the Melbourne School of Design and published by AADR - Art Architecture Design Research. Inflection is a themed journal, to be published annually and features work from students, academics and practitioners. Crucially, Inflection is also a physical object û an artefact to be touched, handled and read in depth. At a time when our engagement with architectural ideas is increasingly digital and transient, Inflection offers a different, slower form of discourse and in doing so, hopes to facilitate and engage in conversations about the built environment both locally and internationally. In this issue, the word inflection serves as our point of departure. The authors featured here enter into conversations on edge conditions, ambiguous boundaries and the role and nature of transitions.

Money plays a paradoxical role in the creation of architecture. Formless itself, money is a fundamental form giver. At all scales, and across the ages, architecture is a product of the financial environment in which it is conceived, for better or worse. Yet despite its ubiquity, money is often disregarded as a factor in conceptual design and is persistently avoided by architectural academia as a serious field of inquiry. It is time to break these habits. In the contemporary world, in which economies are increasingly connected, architects must creatively harness the financial logics behind architecture in order to contribute meaningfully to the development of the built environment. This issue of Perspecta -- the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal in America -- examines the ways in which money intersects with architectural discourse, design practice, and urban form, in order to encourage a productive relationship between money and the discipline.

For the first time, a general theme was given to the national pavilions at this yearÆs Architecture Biennale in Venice. They were to be historical shows, focused on the impact of modernity on a countryÆs architecture. What it produced was not just a global survey of twentieth century construction, but also heroic stories of nation-building. Yes, architecture can build nations. Today, we seem far from that notion. The nation-state is either giving up on itself, or exploited through tyrannical regimes. Meanwhile architects are hardly taking up the cause. ''Volume'' went to Venice to read and review the pavilions messages, and makes the case for building a nation.
