Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, the Hermitage Museum is one of the largest museums in the world. In early 2000, it was decided that the eastern wings General Staff Building (182030) should be converted into a museum of 19th and 20th century art, and an international architectural competetition was held. St Petersburg-based Studio 44 won the commission for the elegant manner with which it addressed the projects complexity, by preserving the integrity of the original design, adapting a ministry building into an exhibition space, incorporating 21st-century museum technologies and connecting to the main buildings and public areas of the city beyond. The centrepiece of the design is a breathtaking enfilade that will enthral visitors to the new space. The scale and dramatic outcome of the building provides a treasure trove of information and inspiration for architects, museum visitors, curators and anyone interested in Russias rich cultural heritage, of which this building marks a new chapter.

The Tugendhat House in Brno (Czech Republic) was named by UNESCO in 2001 as one of the most important buildings of modern architecture and as a World Heritage Site. Mies van der Rohe designed and built it in 1928-1930 and it is beyond any doubt one of the pinnacles in his career. Based on the monograph of 1998 (in English: 2000) the authors describe the complex aspects of this house: personal, historical, art historical, architecture theoretical and restoration scientific ones. Most recent additions include personal reminiscences, photography experiments by Fritz Tugendhat and previously unpublished footage from the family mansion, the house''s history after 1997, the conservation of scientifically important materiality of the house and comments on the methodology and techniques of restoration in 2010-2012.

Renowned designers Charles and Ray Eames are among the greatest designers of the 20th century. They are, of course, most well known for their groundbreaking and iconic furniture designs, but they also created important, creative, experimental, and beautiful work in the areas of architecture, exhibit design, textile design, product design, graphic design, toy design, film, and photography. The Eameses distinctly postwar American enthusiasm and openness to the world around them gave them free license to explore work in many disciplines. This book celebrates the seamlessness and fluidity in which they operated as both a husband-and-wife team and as designers unrestricted by traditionally professional boundaries. They brought a sense of innocence and playfulness to the design process, as well as a tremendous love and discipline in all they created in many different fields and mediums. Augmenting the abundant visual images, Eames Demetrios Charles s grandson and the essays and an insightful introduction.

In K2S Beyond the Wall of Sound, the architecture oeuvre of renowned young Finnish architects K2S is at last published in its entirety from the ovoid, remarkable Kamppi Chapel to the large-scale, complex development of the now iconic Olympic Stadium canopy. The work of K2S is based on the conviction that good architecture touches the human soul, and does not submit to dogmas or a signature style. To Mikko Summanen, Kimmo Lintula and Niko Sirola, the Finnish word for roots juuret is essential. Their design philosophy is guided by principles of materiality and its sensory aspects, the notion of context, Finnish building traditions and a fourth, innovative dimension. Edited by Salka Hallström Bornold and designed by Dalston Creative, the volume also includes texts by the group''s mentors, Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito and esteemed architecture thinkers Juhani Pallasmaa and Hans Ibelings.

In 1994, after seeing photographs of the plastic sheets given to Rwandan refugees to live under, Shigeru Ban went to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to propose ideas for better shelters. Since then, Ban has been critically heralded for his innovative approaches to environmentally sound architecture and his devotion to humanitarian efforts in the wake of some of the most devastating natural and man-made disasters. His temporary housing has employed everything from plastic beer cartons to paper tubes to create ingeniously flexible spaces. By sourcing unconventional, recycled, inexpensive, local and sustainable materials, he stimulates devastated economies by involving local resources and labor. These works stem from empathy and have restored shelter and gathering places, offering comfort, protection and dignity to stricken communities around the world. This important volume is the first book-length study to collect, catalogue and examine these works. Essays and people.

Architecture is a strange mixture of persistence and flux, an amalgamation of elements -- some that have been around for over 5,000 years and others that were (re)invented yesterday. The fact that these elements change independently of each other, according to different cycles and economies, and for different reasons, turns each building into a complex collage of the archaic and the current, the site-specific and the standard, mechanical smoothness and the spontaneous. Only by looking at the elements under a wide lens can we recognize the cultural preferences, forgotten symbolism, technological advances, mutations triggered by intensifying global exchange, climatic adaptions, political calculations, regulatory requirements, new digital regimes, and, somewhere in the mix -- the ideas of the architect that constitute the practice of architecture today. A collection of these essential elements into 15 books in a package launched at the 2014 Venice Biennale that allows us to look through a microscope at the

Pet architecture is a term for the buildings that have been squeezed into left over urban spaces. Curious shapes and inventive solutions for drainage, windows and air conditioning abound. Most of all, it is the extraordinary miniature size of these shacks, store rooms, sushi bars and bike shops which makes this project so fresh. Lovingly researched by a team of very young Japanese architects, each ''pet'' includes a humorous description, full page photograph, a map and 3d sketch.
