Aalto''s significant body of work includes architecture and design, spanning furniture, textiles and glassware. Considered by most to be by far the most popular and accessible of the first generation of leading Modern architects, Aalto''s architecture is arguably unmatched by that of any other major designer of the 20th century in its integration with place and daily life. This book engages the architecture of Aalto through an integrated examination of his major works, how they engage the light, climate and topography of their sites, exemplifying the way in which he extended Finnish tradition and engaged newly emerging Modern materials. It describes the actual inhabitation of Aalto''s architecture and the way in which daily life and of contemporary culture are integrated in the experience of interior space - something that was of paramount importance to Aalto.

Tschumi Parc de la Villette includes drawings, concept sketches, models and photographs showing the development of the Parc over three decades, brought together in a single volume for the first time since the 1980s. One of the Grands Projets commissioned by the French Government in the 1980s, Parc de la Villette set a benchmark for urban parks in the latter part of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.

The Tokyo-based architecture firm Atelier Bow-Wow, founded in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima, is among the most admired architecture practices of today. Part of a whole generation of Japanese firms that seized the recession of the early 1990s as an opportunity to develop a new design practice in response to changed planning and social conditions, Atelier Bow-Wow is well known for its domestic and cultural architecture, as well as its research exploring micro-architecture. The firm''s first studies focused on anonymous Tokyo buildings and highlighted the ways in which they met the requirements of residents and visitors. Additionally, founders Tsukamoto and Kaijima devised a particular type of residential building for Tokyo--a small-scale house that offers an ideal solution to the restrictions of the densely populated megacity. This publication unifies Atelier Bow-Wow''s architectural and theoretical work.

How to deal with historic buildings has long been a core issue of the international architectural discourse. Herzog & de Meuron began addressing the potential of existing structures very early on: the maintenance and alteration of buildings are among the key strategies of the architects. For the Park Avenue Armory in New York, Herzog & de Meuron have designed a new model for dealing with monuments. The historical building was opened in 1881 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan as a meeting place and training ground for the National Guard, and boasts a rich mixture of different styles. Herzog & de Meuron developed a multifaceted strategy for the transformation of the building, now used as a cultural center, that allows for a combination of restoration, transformation, and innovation. From the exposing of historic structures to the addition of new elements, the architecture gained new vibrancy from the considered entanglement of different aspects.

The Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976), was one of the key exponents of Modernism and the International Style. He began his career in the 1920s with buildings in the Nordic Classical style, but was drawn to International Modernism by the end of the decade. Aalto''s Paimio Sanatorium (1929-1933) can be counted as a masterwork of the period in the global context. In the mid-1930s, Aalto broke away from the Modernist group known as CIAM to develop his own vocabulary of form in a more complex direction and he created the free-form approach to design for which his architecture became world famous. The best-known expressions of the free-form approach are the easy chair he designed for Paimio, the Savoy vase and the Villa Mairea. Aalto''s rise to become a master of International Modernism stemmed from his humanitarian approach, which can best be seen in the scale of his buildings and in the way he used materials.
