This book features outstanding examples of student housing from around the world, each project accompanied by full-color photographs, drawings, and detailed commentary from the architects themselves.

An in-depth study of one of Boston''s treasured cultural landmarks, the pioneering patron behind the collection, and the Pritzker Prize-winning architect who modernized the Gardner Museum''s vision. When Isabella Stewart Gardner opened her exquisitely curated collection to the public in 1903, she could hardly have imagined the more than 250,000 visitors that now annually explore the art and furnishings housed in her historic re-creation of a Venetian palace. Tasked with the first addition to the museum since its founding, Renzo Piano Building Workshop has brought Gardner''s vision into the new millennium. In addition to sumptuous images of the courtyards, gardens, and galleries of the original stone palazzo and rarely seen journal pages and photographs, this beautifully designed volume features architectural renderings and new photographs of the 70,000-square-foot wing. Essays address Gardner''s life, including her friendships with Henry James, James McNeill Whistler, and John Singer Sargent.

The Ludwigsburg Museum houses evidence of the art and cultural heritage of the city of Ludwigsburg and Wurttemberg. The modern conception and excellent exhibition graphics produce a convincing permanent exhibition that is regularly supplemented by special shows. Last year, the museum found a new home in a protected building from the era of the city founder, Eberhard Ludwig: In the historical building that was lovingly renovated by the architects Lederer+Ragnarsdottir+Oei, who also added an extension, the borders between architecture and exhibition design (by HG Merz) blur. The result is a positive and highly attractive example of modern museum architecture. This illustrated book is a practical guide for the creation of buildings and exhibition with articles by Prof. Arno Lederer and Prof. HG Merz.

For decades municipalities in Lower Austria have cooperated with the provincial government to provide families with - mostly free - kindergarten places near their homes. In December 2007 regulations came into force that allow children from the age of two-and-a-half to enter kindergarten, as opposed to the age of three previously. This led to the creation of additional kindergarten places. From 2008 and almost concurrently, more than three hundred municipalities set out to implement this expansion program. Within three years 667 additional classes were created and some 65% of the infrastructure of Lower Austrian public kindergartens renovated. This enormous number of architectural impulses has literally reformed the kindergarten scene in Lower Austria like nothing that went before. A unique architectural, logistic and economic achievement and an infrastructure project without parallel anywhere in the world.

November 1989, the place of the first Berlin Wall opening on November 9, 1989; and the site of the last full remains of the Berlin Wall, where fifty years after its construction the Berlin Wall Memorial was built.

Although above and underground car parks only fulfil the must-have incidental purpose of access by individual vehicles, their construction has to be of high quality, and of course without any defects. For many buildings, underground car parks form the foundations for the entire bearing structure, and for public buildings they are often the entrance area. However, car parks are often only taken into account in the planning process too late and with insufficient specialist expertise. This manual describes state-of-the-art structural design for car parks. In so doing, it extrapolates on best practices in the industry and is based on German and European standards. The experienced team of authors who worked with Ilja Irmscher, have set out a universally applicable method and key tools that aim to create user-friendly, cost-efficient and functional car parks. Two volumes in slipcase: Volume 1: Planning Principles + Volume 2: Buildings and Projects.

Museums are often among the most iconic buildings to grace a citys skyline. In fact, through the very prestige of the architects involved and the innovation of material form, a new museum can easily herald a citys arrival on the world stage as a center for art and culture. Some are broad in appeal, collecting signature works in a wide variety of media and from a number of artistic or historic periods. Others are ultra focused, reflecting local or brand heritage. All are unique - thanks to the visions of the architects featured - from the the Maritime Museum in Lingan New City, China surmounted by two seemingly weightless sails to the Riverside Museum in Glasgow with its unforgettable faade and lack of interior columns. Includes designs by Alberto Campo Baeza, Atelier Brckner, Atsushi Kitagawara Architects, Mario Botta, Gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects, Steven Holl Architects and Zaha Hadid many with accompanying plans.

A comprehensive look at the eagerly anticipated New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, and the celebrated collection it houses. Marking the opening of the New Acropolis Museum, this book examines both its architecture and the archaeological treasures it was built to house. The building addresses the dramatic complexities of the collection and the site with minimalist simplicity by using three main materials - glass, stainless steel, and concrete. "There''s no way at the beginning of the twenty-first century you can try to imitate even superficially the art of 2, 500 years ago," Tschumi says. The "precision of the concept was really what counted." The book provides an in-depth look at the creation of the building, set only 280 meters from the Parthenon, as well as the restoration, preservation, and housing of its exhibits through over 200 photographs, drawings, and texts.
