The Chinati Foundation is widely considered one of the worldÆs most important destinations for experiencing large-scale contemporary art. It was founded by Donald Judd (1928û1994), whose specific ambition was to preserve and present a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape. Chinati is located on 340 acres of desert on the site of former Fort D.A. Russell in Marfa, Texas. Construction and installation at the site began in 1979 with help from the Dia Art Foundation, and it was opened to the public in 1986. Even with the advent of the digital camera and the electronic storage of photos, every family still has at least a few family snapshots, and many have album upon album and box upon box. Individual snapshots are often glanced at casually before they are set aside and vanish from memory, but in this private sea of photographic uniformity, Arnold Odermatt''s family pictures, collected here, manage to convey a signature style, standing out for their clarity and order, and for the oddly detached demeanor of their subjects. Odermatt, a Swiss police officer and crime photographer, achieved fame with his black-and-white journal of 1940s-1990s car accidents, Karambolage. His second book, On Duty, documented the daily life of the small police corps with which he worked for many years, effectively advertising their skills and services. In September the work of the contemporary Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara will fill New York City''s Asia Society Museum (of which Chiu is director) in an unprecedented one-man show. This catalogue also pulls out all the stops. Mimicking the windows in Nara''s installations, an elaborate slipcase has cutouts with several of Nara''s captivating characters peeking out. The essays, of uneven quality, place Nara in the company of animator Walt Disney, indie rock, and Margaret Keane, a painter of kitschy, wide-eyed child-people. Nara speaks best for himself in 300 illustrations and in several blog entries. He describes his love of album jacket art: "Once I spilled coffee over a jacket. It didn''t affect the sound, but I ended up buying the same record again (laugh...)." These excerpts represent Nara as a truly contemporary artist engaged with social media and unafraid to pop up on mass merchandise. With its punk music influences and Morton-salt-girl-meets-David-Lynch aesthetic, represented here.

5/6# THE POLITICS OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT The three Scandinavian countries are all developing national strategies of architecture politics. Each country has now released an official strategy document. Their common goal is to bring quality to all levels of architecture and planning. However, the national strategy documents give few answers to the most difficult questions: what constitutes quality in architecture, who should define it, and how should it be implemented? The tendency of these political strategies seems to be based on standards and consensus of opinions. There is little interest in initiating debates on the fundamental level. The aim of these documents appears to be to get rid of conflicting views and marginal players by establishing some very static and non-committing definitions. The current double issue of conditions,which explores the politics of quality management in architecture, tries to counter this tendency.
